Eyebrow: a geological exclusive: a single mine on Earth
Tanzanite
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 at the foot of Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, when a group of Maasai herders noticed unusual blue stones among the rocks of the Merelani hills, near Arusha. Gemologist Manuel de Souza was the one to recognize that these weren’t sapphires, but a variety of zoisite never classified before. The following year, Tiffany & Co. launched its international marketing campaign, calling it “the most beautiful gemstone discovered in 2,000 years.”
