Mastio della Cittadella<\/h2>\n

The Citadel of Turin (sitadela ‘d Turin in Piedmontese) was a pentagonal Savoy fortress located along the ancient city walls of Turin, to the southwest of the historic center.<\/p>\n

Built between 1564 and 1570 based on designs by Francesco Paciotto and under the direction of General Robilant, it was commissioned by Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, who intended to modernize the city’s defenses after the capital of the Duchy was moved from Chamb\u00e9ry to Turin. It is primarily remembered as the site of the War of Spanish Succession, during the siege of 1706 by the Franco-Spanish army of King Louis XIV.<\/p>\n

The only surviving part of the ancient fortification is the Mastio, the two-story entrance building, which houses the National Historical Museum of Artillery.
